There are some Olympic-sized savings going on at the Shelton Residence Inn in Shelton, Conn.

A recent retrofit of 1,756 light bulbs to low-energy light bulbs will save enough carbon dioxide annually to fill the equivalent of 15.25 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The Residence Inn’s management company Island Properties hired The Eric Ryan Corporation in Ellwood City, Pa., to evaluate energy consumption in its 80 properties and identify any savings.

ERC’s Energy Service Department has evaluated 23 Island properties, so far.

Changing the lights at the Shelton Residence Inn to low-energy bulbs in the 96-room hotel will save Island $16,000 a year on its lighting bill.

The hotel was also able to finance 70 percent of the lighting upgrade with incentive rebates offered by its local utility company.

“Taking into account the rebates and the average amount spent on electricity each month, this location should be able to realize a payback of four months on this project,” said Chad Ubry, president of ERC’s Energy Services Division.

The change in lighting equates to a savings of about 88,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, not using 88,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity equates to not releasing 68.6 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

That is the equivalent of taking 12.6 passenger vehicles off the roads for a year; saving enough energy to power electricity for 9.1 homes for one year; and not sending 23.7 tons of waste to a landfill, according to the EPA.
